How to Install Sound Deadening Mats: Beginner's Guide
Share
Installing sound deadening mats is one of the easiest and most rewarding DIY vehicle upgrades you can do. No specialist skills needed — just peel, stick, and roll. Here's how to get professional results.
Tools You'll Need
- Metal roller — essential for pressing mats flat (don't skip this!)
- Prep spray degreaser — clean panels for maximum adhesion
- Trim removal tools — for safely removing interior panels
- Utility knife or heavy scissors — for cutting mats to size
- Heat gun (optional) — makes mats more flexible in cold weather
- Cleaning rags
Step 1: Remove Interior Panels
Remove the panels in the area you're treating. For doors, pop off the door card. For the boot, remove the carpet and trim. For the floor, remove seats and carpet.
Tip: Take photos before removal so you know where everything goes back.
Step 2: Clean the Metal
This step is crucial. Use panel prep spray or isopropyl alcohol to degrease all metal surfaces. The deadening adhesive needs clean metal to bond properly. Dust, oil, or moisture = poor adhesion.
Step 3: Cut and Apply the Mats
Cut your sound deadening mats to fit the panel. Peel off the backing paper and press firmly onto the metal surface. Don't try to cover 100% — aim for 60-80% coverage on each panel.
Tips:
- Focus on the centre of panels where vibration is highest
- Avoid covering drain holes in doors
- Leave clearance for window mechanisms in doors
- In cold weather, warm the mats slightly with a heat gun for better flexibility
Step 4: Roll It Flat
Use your metal roller to press every part of each mat firmly against the metal. This removes air bubbles and ensures full contact adhesion. Roll firmly in multiple directions.
This is the most important step — poorly rolled mats will eventually lift and lose effectiveness.
Step 5: Add Insulation (Optional but Recommended)
For maximum noise and heat reduction, add a layer of closed cell foam insulation over the deadening. The deadening stops vibration; the foam blocks remaining airborne noise and adds thermal insulation.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Skipping the degreasing step — mats will lift over time
- Not using a roller — air bubbles reduce effectiveness by up to 50%
- Blocking door drain holes — water needs somewhere to go
- Using cheap asphalt-based products — they smell in hot weather and lose adhesion. Always buy butyl-based mats
- Trying to cover 100% — unnecessary and wastes material
What Order to Treat Your Vehicle
If you're doing a full vehicle, work in this order for the biggest impact first:
- Doors — biggest immediate improvement
- Floor — reduces road noise dramatically
- Boot — stops resonance and boom
- Roof — reduces rain drumming and wind noise
- Wheel arches — targets tyre roar at source
