Converting a van into a campervan? Soundproofing is one of the most important steps you'll take. Without it, you'll hear every raindrop, passing lorry and engine vibration — turning your dream build into a noisy nightmare. Here's how to do it properly.
Why Soundproof Your Campervan?

Step 1: Sound Deadening (The Foundation)
Start with CLD sound-deadening mats applied directly to bare metal panels. This stops panel vibration — the biggest source of noise in any van.
What to buy:
- A pre-measured campervan sound-deadening kit — sized for standard campervan panels
- Or buy individual 2mm deadening sheets if you prefer to calculate your own coverage
Where to apply: Floor, walls, roof, wheel arches and doors. Aim for 60-80% coverage — you don't need every square inch.
Step 2: Closed-Cell Foam Insulation (The Barrier)
Layer CCF noise barrier over the deadening. This blocks airborne sound and provides thermal insulation — essential for comfortable van life.
What to buy:
- 6mm or 10mm self-adhesive closed-cell foam liner — the campervan favourite
- Thicker foam (10-15mm) for walls and roof, thinner (6mm) where space is tight
Step 3: Acoustic Foam (The Absorber)
For maximum quiet, add acoustic foam in key areas such as the bonnet (engine noise) and behind wall panels.
What to buy:
- Open-cell bonnet liner foam for under the bonnet
- Open-cell acoustic foam behind panels where space allows
Step 4: Mass Loaded Vinyl (Maximum Blocking)
For the ultimate soundproofing, add MLV to bulkheads and floor areas. This dense material blocks the lowest frequencies that other materials can't touch.
What to buy: mass loaded vinyl sheet, either plain or with a closed-cell foam backing
