What is Mass Loaded Vinyl?
MLV is a thin, dense, flexible sheet material loaded with minerals (usually barium sulphate or calcium carbonate) that give it exceptional mass per square metre. That mass is what blocks sound — the heavier the barrier, the more sound it stops.
MLV vs Sound-Deadening Mats — What's the Difference?
- Sound-deadening mats (CLD) reduce vibration in metal panels. They stop the panel itself from resonating.
- Mass loaded vinyl (MLV) blocks airborne sound from passing through. It stops noise transmission.
They do different things. For the best results, use both together — deadening on the metal first, then MLV on top.
Where to Use MLV in Your Vehicle
- Floor pans — blocks road and tyre noise coming up through the floor
- Firewall and bulkhead — stops engine noise entering the cabin
