Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about our sound deadening products, orders, and installation.
Products & Materials
What is CLD sound deadening and how does it work?
CLD (Constrained Layer Damping) mats are butyl-based sheets with an aluminium constraining layer. When applied to vehicle panels, they convert vibration energy into heat, reducing resonance and panel noise. They're the foundation of any sound deadening project.
What's the difference between CLD, CCF, MLV and acoustic foam?
CLD mats — Butyl dampers that stop panel vibration. Apply directly to metal surfaces.
CCF (Closed Cell Foam) — Blocks airborne noise and provides thermal insulation. Goes over CLD as a second layer.
MLV (Mass Loaded Vinyl) — Dense vinyl barrier for maximum airborne noise reduction. Best for floors and bulkheads.
Acoustic Foam — Open cell foam that absorbs sound energy inside cavities. Great for doors and pillars.
What products do I need for a van conversion?
For a full van conversion, we recommend a 3-layer approach: 1) CLD deadening mats on all metal panels, 2) CCF noise barrier for thermal insulation and airborne noise blocking, 3) Acoustic foam in doors and pillars. Our bundle kits include everything you need at a discounted price.
Which product is best for reducing road noise?
For road noise, focus on the floor, wheel arches, and doors. Start with CLD mats on all these areas, then add CCF noise barrier on top. For maximum reduction, add MLV mass loaded vinyl between layers. This multi-layer approach can reduce road noise by 50% or more.
Will sound deadening improve my car audio?
Absolutely! Sound deadening dramatically improves car audio by eliminating panel resonance and rattles that compete with your speakers. Your bass will be tighter, mids clearer, and you'll hear details you never noticed before. CLD mats on doors where speakers are mounted make the biggest difference.
How are your products selected?
All our products are carefully selected for real-world acoustic performance. We provide clear specifications — not marketing claims. Each product listing includes detailed specifications including thickness, weight, coverage area, and temperature range.

Installation & Application
Do I need special tools to install sound deadening?
No special tools are required. Most products are self-adhesive — simply peel and stick. However, we strongly recommend using a roller (available in our accessories section) to ensure proper adhesion and eliminate air bubbles. You'll also want scissors or a utility knife for cutting.
How do I prepare surfaces before applying?
Clean the surface thoroughly with isopropyl alcohol or a degreaser to remove any dirt, oil, or wax. The surface must be completely dry before application. For best results, apply at room temperature (15°C+). Cold surfaces reduce adhesion quality.
Do I need to cover 100% of the surface?
No! For CLD deadening mats, covering 60-80% of a panel gives you 95% of the maximum benefit. Focus on the centre of large flat panels where vibration is greatest. For CCF and MLV, full coverage gives the best results for airborne noise blocking.
Can I apply sound deadening in cold weather?
We recommend applying in temperatures above 15°C for optimal adhesion. If working in cold conditions, warm the panels and material with a heat gun or hair dryer before application. Store materials at room temperature for 24 hours before use.
In what order should I apply the layers?
Layer 1: CLD deadening mat directly on the bare metal panel.
Layer 2: CCF closed cell foam or MLV over the CLD layer.
Layer 3: Acoustic foam for additional absorption (optional).
Always apply CLD first — it needs direct contact with the vibrating surface to work.
Returns & Refunds
What is your returns policy?
You can cancel and return any order within 14 days of delivery, for any reason. You may open and inspect the goods first without losing that right. If you have changed your mind, you pay the return postage. Please contact us before sending anything back so we can arrange the return.
Can I return a product that's been partially used?
Opening a pack to inspect the material does not affect your right to cancel. If a product has been handled more than was necessary to inspect it, for example applied to a vehicle, cut or stuck down, we may reduce your refund to reflect the loss in value, and we will always explain any deduction in writing first. Goods cut to a size you specified cannot be cancelled unless they are faulty.
How long do refunds take?
Once we receive your return, we'll inspect the products and process your refund within 5 working days, and always within 14 days of receiving the goods back. The refund will be credited to your original payment method. You'll receive an email confirmation when it's processed.
What if I receive a damaged or faulty product?
Contact us immediately at sales@soundproofingshop.co.uk with your order number and photos of the damage. You have 30 days from delivery to reject faulty or damaged goods and claim a full refund. We'll arrange a replacement or full refund at no cost to you, including return postage.
